The Worlds Weirdest Museums: Europe
We’ve talked about the Penis Museum in Iceland before. I’d imagine you remember it… it’s one of those stories that’s quite difficult to forget! Today we’re going to have a look at those other weird museums. Those museums about something so obscure, so specific, that they sound unreal. In fact, there are so many to choose from, we’re just doing Europe today. We’ll cover other parts of the world in future blog posts.
So if you’ve got one in your local town, please let us know in the comments! Bob’s World of Cigarette Burns (Soft Furnishings only) in Cow Creek, California, for example. Or Jef’s History of Horse Insurance in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. We want to hear about them all! I feel a weird museum road trip coming on…

Amsterdam is famous world-wide for, well, unusual behaviour, so it’s no surprise that it also has some unusual museums! Whilst strolling along the canals, you can also visit the Sex Museum, the Torture Museum, the Handbag Museum, and newest of all, the Vodka Museum. That’s quite a lot of weird museums to see in one holiday…
Germany also has its share of odd museums. Deutsches Tapenten Museum in Kassel (not normally a huge tourist destination) is none other than a wallpaper museum. Hamburg on the other hand has the truly amazing Miniatur Wunderland. It’s the worlds largest model railway, and it is immense. It even includes a working chocolate factory!
Sadly in Paris, the Musee de la Serrure (a museum about locks!) is currently closed and looks unlikely to re-open. However the Paris Catacombs are a popular tourist attraction, housing the bones of millions of ex-Parisians. I’m much keener on the Musee de la Magie (the museum of magic) which includes a live magic show at the start of the tour.
Continuing the slightly morbid theme of the Catacombs, Barcelona has a museum entirely dedicated to funeral carriages! Whilst in Spain it would be a pity to miss out on the chance to visit the Dali Museum in Figueres. This one might not strictly belong on the weird museum list, but as Dali was the king of surrealism, it would’ve seemed a pity to leave him out!
Look out for the USA, UK, Australia and Asia weird museum lists coming soon. And don’t forget to forward links to any you think we might miss!
